New research from the Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity (PRE) shows a troubling trend: funding for communities of color and racial justice is falling back a decade, even as needs soar. Between 2019 and 2023, overall institutional giving grew 44%, but the share devoted to communities of color dropped to just 6.8%, lower than 2014 levels. Movement leaders warn that this retreat leaves communities under unprecedented pressure amid attacks on equity, democracy, and civil society.
